IGP says, the duty of the Police is to follow the President’s orders
Inspector general of police Pujith Jayasundara announced today that he can only act based on the President’s orders.
He noted that the president appointed a new prime minister as per the extraordinary gazette 2014/44 issued on the 26th of October 2018 and has also appointed a new cabinet of ministers.
The IGP said that parliamentarians Daya Gamage, Nali Bandara, and Palitha Thewarapperuma arrived at the police headquarters on Tuesday (Nov 7) and delivered a letter from Ranjith Maddumabandara informing the IGP to reinstate the previous security detail of the former Ministers.
He said the security has been assigned based on the current provisions, therefore he noted that he cannot act on the details provided in those letters. He went onto note that the president in his capacity of executive president and the executive in charge of the Ministry of defense and law and order has issued special instructions to him as well as the police.
IGP Jayasundara said that the Sri Lanka Police will act on the instructions of the President as he is the person who served as the executive and is in charge of the Ministry of law and order.
When journalists questioned about the communique which states that as per the 19th amendment the Ministry of Law and order cannot be under the president and about the former Prime Minister’s security being reduced to 10. IGP Pujith Jayasundara said that it does not concern him.
