Several areas go under water

Several Low-lying areas of the country have gone underwater due to torrential rains. Many areas including Main Street, Wakwella Road, Dangedera, Nugaduwa, Samagiwatta and Beligaha areas in Galle have gone underwater due to the inclement weather in the region. Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Centre Pradeep Kodippili said that Disaster Management Units in the District are on standby at present. Balapitiya, Paathamulla, Welithara and Welibada areas have submerged due to heavy rains. Vehicular movement in the areas have been disrupted as the roads in those areas have gone under water. Balapitiya Divisional Secretariat said that immediate steps would be taken to clean the drainage systems to prevent blocking of the draining of water in low-lying areas. Floods have been reported from several areas of the Kalutara District. Payagala Sri Saddharmaguptha Piriven Moola Maha Piriven Viharaya has submerged due to heavy rains. Our reporter said that several buildings of the temple have gone underwater. Transport on Hatton – Colombo was limited to one lane as an earth mound fell on the road at Malliyappu area. Police said that heavy fog is reported from the area with the rains. They requested the drivers to be careful when driving in the area.
