Waste Oil leak in Jaffna Chunnakam wells! Provincial Council members inspect (Photos)
Waste oil spill has become a massive problem in wells found in Jaffna-Chunnakam region, which is under Valigamam South division.
In order to solve this problem, Northern Provincial Council Agriculture Minister P. Ayngaranesan of TNA, Northern Provincial Council members Dharmalingam Siddharthan, P. Gajadeepan, Divisional Council Chairman Prakash and other Divisional council members went to the region on 23.08.2014 and they inspected wells.
About this PLOTE leader, the Northern Provincial Council member Mr. Dharmalingam Siddharthan of Tamil National Alliance said:
The power station generators of Sri Lanka Electricity Board functioning in Chunnakam is releasing Waste Oil, which gets mixed with water springs found in that region, and there by affecting several wells used by 700 to 800 families in the region. This has become a massive problem and because of this, people in that division are not able to use water in such wells for drinking water, bathing or irrigation purposes.
Moreover this waste oil spill is spreading to several other places in the region apart from Chunnakam. In the first phase of taking steps to resolve this issue, Northern Provincial Council has supplied a Water Dowser to the region. In the next step, they have planned to take legal proceedings against Electricity Board as well. In this situation only, inspection has happened yesterday. It is to be noted that the Sri Lanka Electricity Board or Chunnakam Electricity Station are not coming under the administrative control of Northern Provincial Council.
Hence a solution to this issue has to be found out only by Northern Provincial Council having discussions with Central Government or the President.
